For Ford Focus parts enquiries. Handbook examples apply to the CG3784en build range 2 November 2020–14 March 2021; select your own handbook for other vehicles.
A request for a Focus engine or alternator can refer to different systems. Before looking for a used unit, separate what the vehicle is doing from which component a workshop has actually found faulty. The useful starting point is the car's identity and evidence, not a generic list of Focus problems.
Ford Focus engine guide: record more than engine size
The identification-plate example in the scoped Ford handbook separates model, variant, engine designation, power or emission level and VIN. Use the details for your actual vehicle when preparing an enquiry; the handbook example is not a universal plate decoder. Photograph an accessible label only when it is safe to do so, or ask the workshop to record it.
Have the repairer confirm the original failure and the exact replacement required. Ask the seller whether its offer is a bare assembly or includes the ancillaries your workshop needs. Request condition evidence and an itemised list, rather than interpreting the word complete as a promise. Agree who assesses surrounding systems before a replacement is installed.
Focus alternator problems: check whether it is mild hybrid
Ford's scoped handbook describes a 48-V mild-hybrid system and a starter-generator. It has separate start-stop information for mild-hybrid and other versions. Establish which version you own before treating a search for a Focus alternator as identification of the correct unit.
In that handbook, start-stop can be inactive because of engine warm-up, battery condition or climate requirements. Start-stop not operating is therefore not enough evidence to buy an alternator. Ask the workshop to assess the battery, connections and charging system and record its findings. Do not work on a hybrid system using conventional-alternator instructions.
Focus ECU replacement: separate diagnosis from supply
Ask the repairer for the exact module description and the results supporting replacement. Record the old unit's complete identifiers and clarify whether the supplier wants the original returned. Before ordering, agree who checks compatibility and handles any software, coding or security preparation required by the actual car.
A tested repair, prepared exchange and used module are different offers. Bosch's exchange example includes software and coding transfer, which must not be assumed for another seller's unit. Ask what happens if the workshop finds that the proposed module cannot be commissioned, and retain the written response.
Use the Focus catalogue links as a starting point
Open the Ford make page for model and component browsing, then use the original component identifiers to refine the enquiry. For a charging unit, ask which output, connector and drive-system details the workshop needs confirmed. Do not substitute a similar-looking unit because the registration lookup describes the same engine size.
A useful enquiry contains the registration, build details, full part number, a clear description of the diagnosed need and available photographs. Say if a previous owner changed the engine or other relevant equipment. That helps a supplier explain its match rather than assuming factory specification is still present.
Questions for a Ford Focus breaker
Ask the business to confirm the actual Focus component it has, not simply whether it breaks Fords. For an engine or charging unit, request photographs of the identifier and the offered assembly. Ask whether any test was performed before removal or afterwards, what that test covered and whether faults were disclosed.
Compare what is included, delivery, return carriage and fitting requirements in writing. A directory listing is not a stock feed and a donor's mileage is not a remaining-life guarantee. Speak to the supplier before travelling; this site has no walk-in parts counter.

Frequently asked questions
Questions about this guide
Is a Focus mild-hybrid starter-generator the same enquiry as a conventional alternator?
Do not assume so. Identify the exact powertrain and charging-system component with the workshop before requesting a replacement.
Does inactive Focus start-stop prove the alternator has failed?
No. The scoped Ford handbook lists operating conditions that can prevent start-stop. Have the actual symptom assessed before ordering a part.
What should accompany a Focus engine enquiry?
Include vehicle and engine identifiers, the workshop's description, the assembly required and photographs where available. Ask the supplier to explain the proposed match and included items.
